Hi,
A trace of a tiny IgA lambda paraprotein was found and my haematologist is giving me thorough testing as per my request. I've opted to have a bone marrow biopsy. This will happen on the 8th May.
Quick question regarding the potential results. I've read a lot of posts with people talking about bone marrow biopsies when they have MGUS and a figure of under 5% plasma cells is mentioned.
My question is this: Should there be any plasma cells shown if the person does not have MGUS. To clarify, I'm asking if a bone marrow biopsy is "normal", should any plasma cells be seen?
Hope that makes sense!
Thank you and best wishes,
Lucy

Re: What is the normal bone marrow plasma cell percentage?
Lucy,
A person without any sort of monoclonal gammopathy should have a bone marrow plasma cell percentage between 0-5%.

Re: What is the normal bone marrow plasma cell percentage?
Should it maybe be clarified that a bone marrow biopsy is normal with up to 5% normal plasma cells?
The reason I ask is because my bone marrow biopsy found only 1% plasma cells, but they were all malignant. At least the pathologist report indicated normal plasma cells not identified.

Good clarification C.O.
So, a normal bone marrow biopsy would actually be "up to 5% normal plasma cells, with no abnormal plasma cells being detected".
