My father 65 has had extra protein in the blood for over 10 years and about 7-8 months ago they diagnosed myeloma . He has had 2 treatments so far one CYLCOPHOSPHAMIDE / DEXAMETHASONE based and later Velcade/DEX over the last 6 months but with very little impact on the bone marrow tests ..and Urine test/light chains/proteins had also increased. With the Cyc his kidneys failed ( they specialist did not know why as it was not the normal "myeloma kidney" and about 6 weeks later they started functioning again also unusual apparantly ). With Velcade he has had a lot of problems with lung infections and fevers ...though he has put on some weight lately ( prob the steroid)
Little bone damage and no chromosome damage but a lot of bone pain in the knees to hips ( he has the bone hardening treatment but that is also painful) . The doctor also said that the plasma had increased from 3% in 2009 to 60% now. He also said something about the protein gone up from 7 to 70ml or %?
Current suggestion is Revlimid and if that doesn't work some older chemo drug,
Is this normal ? What are the options
Ben
