Nitrofurantoin and MGUS / multiple myeloma?

by kayleen on Sat Aug 04, 2018 4:19 pm

Does anyone know if there is any link between the antibiotic nitrofurantoin (Macrodantin, Macrobid) and MGUS or multiple myeloma?

I used Macrodantin for five years and developed an autoimmune disease in my body which had many of the same symptoms that brought me to the neurologist this time to find out I have polyneuropathy with IgM MGUS with lambda light chains.

Hum, that's a great question. I was also on Macrodantin (nitrofurantoin) for chronic kidney infections. Not quite as long as you, maybe a year or two. I also have IgM MGUS that caused cold agglutinin, rouleaux, and hemolysis.

I have taken Macrobid (nitrofurantoin) for many years for chronic urinary tract infections. I have IgG lambda MGUS. I take it as a preventative measure after I'm sexually intimate. Should I ask my hematologist-oncologist if this is okay?
