Hello everyone.
Seems like a great forum with lots of candid discussion and help.
I spent the past year visiting physiotherapists for sore lower, middle and upper back, and side quadrant issues, which I attributed to a sudden decline in my running fitness. Little did I know that my last marathon (for the moment anyway) was to be the one I attempted in October 2016 in Victoria BC. I dropped out after 17 km after enduring repeated back spasms and reduced speed.
On November 9, 2016, I admitted myself to emergency due to painful lower back pain and constipation.
That trip rocked my world and the next 6 days confirmed I had multiple myeloma, with fractures in the rib, lytic lesions in my shoulder, and three compressed discs in my T12 area. I must have a greater pain tolerance than I knew of.
Long story short, I left my well paying job in Calgary and came home to Vancouver Island to be with my family full time and to start treatment. The Vancouver Oncology group at the BC Cancer Agency got me set up right away in December with chemo sessions in Nanaimo. Just completed my first 4 days - Velcade, cyclophosphamide and dexamethasone.
Reasonable start without too many side effects. Had some hiccups on morning of Day 2, but took care of with metoclopramide.
Anyway, I am trying to be as positive about this as I can and look forward to hearing from you.

Re: Newly diagnosed father and marathon runner - age 60
Welcome to the forum, Colin!
Sorry to hear that you have myeloma, but hope that your initial treatments go well to put it into a remission. I had a similar painful introduction to this disease, but more than 7 years later, the myeloma seems manageable.
If you are planning to have a stem cell transplant, I think it would be at the Krall Centre in Vancouver. Diana Krall's mother had myeloma and the family set up a treatment centre there.
I live in Calgary, and am treated at the Tom Baker Centre here.
Best wishes to you and your family!
