I hope the information is helpful to you. Good luck to you. My lovely wife reached complete response (CR). Initial induction (5 rounds of VRD – Velcade, Revlimid, and dexamethasone) and an autologous stem cell transplant got us close, but no cigar. Consolidation therapy with Kyprolis, Revlimid, and dexamethasone (KRD) got us to CR. For the moment we are good. Next step, I hope we can make it stick.
Thank you for asking and good luck to you.

Re: Newly diagnosed after kidneys were failing
You've gotten some really good, helpful information so far. Since it seems that you are responding so well to your treatment so far, you should be able to work with little difficulty. Many people on this site have continued to work full time throughout their treatment with time off when doing the stem cell transplant and the recovery. Many people have lived to see their children grow, finish school, marry, and have children of their own. So, stay away from the internet for now other than to read reliable sites like the Beacon.
All the best to you as you move through the initial stages of treatment and learning,

Re: Newly diagnosed after kidneys were failing
I am in the same boat. Went to the hospital in May with major nausea and back pain.
My creatine levels were off the charts. Got a temporary catheter put in. Then, after a PET scan and a bone marrow biopsy, the doctors confirmed a multiple myeloma diagnosis.
It is July and my kidneys are still the same. Begin round 3 of chemo tomorrow. Am wondering how much longer until the kidneys heal on their own.

Re: Newly diagnosed after kidneys were failing
Hi Peter
You're right, we are both in the same boat regarding our situation and the same age. Since being out of hospital, I still have to see the kidney consultant. He has told me that once the chemo starts working, my kidneys from 20% should get up to 50% or more, but it takes time. My creatinine was 430 but now in the normal range, which is between 80 to 120. If your levels are coming down, I'm sure you'll be fine and they will improve.
It's all a shock to take in at first, I'm still getting my head around it all. How have you been dealing with it all?

Re: Newly diagnosed after kidneys were failing
I was in the hospital starting May 16 with back pain and nausea.
My diagnosis came about a week later after officially after a kidney biopsy, PET scan, and bone marrow extraction.
It sucks. I am 41 and aside from hypertension, really have no health issues.
I have lost about 20 pounds and am just really weak. I see my oncologist in a few hours for updates and possible treatment approach switch.
Doing dialysis 3 days a week causes me to miss so much work and I hate it. Plus I cannot shower with the catheter in my chest. So many changes that I just don't like.
I hope by September to be done with dialysis. Then I am taking my wife to the ocean for a few days.

Just take it day by day at the moment. As time goes on, it will improve and you can look forward to your break. There is so much to take in with multiple myeloma I'm still trying to get my head around it all. Good luck
