Newbee here - husband diagnosed January 2014

by michelle1221 on Fri Mar 21, 2014 5:23 pm

My husband was diagnosed with multiple myeloma in January this year. He spent a month in the hospital due to renal failure and to run all the testing required.

He was having symptoms, as far as I can recall, early last year, but the doctors failed to catch it! He was ignored. I knew something was wrong, doctors wouldn't listen to me either. The back and rib pain and the renal failure were his first symptom back in June. Oh wow, he's in stage #3 and we're beginning his 3rd cycle of chemo - Revlimid, Decadron (dexamethasone) and Velcade. They also discovered 5 bone lesions which cause him extreme discomfort.

He's also on dialysis 3 times a week, creatinine level has been as high as 9, but is down to 1.7 as of today! He has cast nephropathy, where the proteins from the myeloma are clogging the tubes in the kidney. So I'm thinking they are going to slow down on dialysis for now which is our first score!

He went from 190 lbs to 135 lbs this past year. In January the bone marrow showed he had 31% of his plasma cells malignant, so soon they will do another bone marrow biopsy and we'll know how well he responded to the chemo. Can't wait.

So I believe that's the short and sweet of where we are at on the medical part my story! This is not my first cancer. I took care of my father for 2 years and he died here with me. So this isn't my first rodeo! I'm a Warrior. I pray for all you here because this is tough. xoxo <3

I am sorry to hear how sick your husband was at initial diagnosis. It sounds like things are moving in the right direction, which is great! Given how sick he was at the beginning, it will be a long road to recovery, but it sounds like he has a wonderful partner to get him there more quickly. I hope you find the stories and information on this site valuable to your journey.

Hang in there!
