Good luck with the Shingrix, Multibilly. Let us know if you experience any side effects that you think might be due to the shot.

The efficacy of a vaccine is totally dependent on the quality of the immune system. The immune system of myeloma patients is damaged and our immune response is also compromised by the drugs we use for treatment. The non live Shingrix vaccine is more than likely safe to use, however the question is whether or not our immune response to the vaccine is adequate.

Hence, my spouse will continue with daily acyclovir, per the recommendation from the oncologist. No big deal. The thought is the additional preventative of shingles, from the Shingrix vaccine. My spouse had an outbreak of shingles prior to diagnosis; hence, anything which can or will help prevent another outbreak of shingles is very welcome.

So far, the only side effect I had from taking the first Shnigrix vaccination was a sore arm for about three days. The injection is intramuscular. After my stem cell transplant, I was prescribed acyclovir for two years, but that was a long time ago now! If a caregiver were to receive the vaccination, at least that person who is in close contact with a patient would not be spreading the infection.

My experience was nearly identical to Nancy's. The deltoid muscle in my arm was sore to the touch for about three days. On day 2, I started to feel like I was at the most very early stage of getting the flu (a little fatigued and the tiniest bit achy overall, but nothing that prevented me from going about my business). That feeling subsided in less than a day. Really, no different than my reaction to other vaccines over the years.

I'm also interested in what sort of reactions can be expected to this vaccine.

I asked my oncologist about the Shingrix vaccine. He said it wouldn't hurt to get the vaccine, but that it might not 'take'. I'm not sure why it wouldn't 'take'? Does anyone know? I got a massive number of vaccines after the transplant.

I'm about 3 years post-transplant. On Revlimid maintenance, 10 mg, continuous, and doing fairly well. Don't really want to go back on acyclovir (which I stopped 1-year post-transplant). I did get shingles during my first round of treatment, but fortunately they caught it right away since I was going in for infusions twice a week.

Hoping the new vaccine will protect me from shingles going forward. My white cells have always been below normal since the transplant.
