new patient

Hello all,

My Dad just got diagnosed with this multiple myeloma. He is 71. Still waiting for the official results from the bone marrow though. I live in Florida and he in California. I'm with him now but can't stay long, but will come back time to time. As his son, I am curious what to expect from treatment. Can he have it at home? How bad will he feel. Should the nurse be hear daily?

Thank you.

Dear Brian,

I am sorry to hear that your father may have a diagnosis of myeloma. The answers to your questions largely depend on how sick your father is from his possible myeloma, how healthy he is otherwise, and the treatment that is chosen for him. Myeloma therapy is quite varied (but effective!) and the treatment chosen is dictated by whether the disease is high or low risk, what other medical conditions the patient brings to the table, social/logistical issues, and patient preference.

Touch base with us once the results of the marrow come in and let us know a bit more about your father's current status, so we can better help answer your questions.

Generally speaking, in the vast majority of cases, myeloma therapy is outpatient.

We are all hoping for the best. Good luck!

Pete V.
