New ideas for pain management & control

by Bob_D on Tue Sep 11, 2018 11:54 pm

For awhile now, I have been having some success in controlling my pain by reducing

  1. Internal inflammation (I use at least 8 mg of dexamethasone per day before I do a lot of physical activity
  2. External vibrations to my body (I use memory foam on all sources of vibration to my bones, e.g., mitts or foam around a car steering wheel, foam collar around my neck, foam seat and back cushions, foam padded shoes)
  3. Back misalignment (I use a back / lumbar brace and I align my back often each afternoon
  4. Tense back muscles (I use a small massage pillow with heated roller balls when my back becomes sore)
But recently I some new developments that may reduce pain without the dependency on opioids:

  • Injected "nanoparticles drug delivery" directly to the pain areas using your own immune system
  • "Mechanoceuticals" that uses a magnetic force to manage pain
  • Discovery of a chemical compound, "AT-121 drug", that provides analgesia without addiction
  • Possible trends to "low-dose ketamine"
  • "Virtual Reality (VR) headsets" for pain management
  • More effective “pulsed electromagnetic field wearable devices” that are unlike a TENs unit

When I saw this news item ("Virtual reality therapy helps patients at Calgary hospital ease anxiety and pain") on our local TV station, it reminded me of people with myeloma who have chronic pain. I am not sure how a patient would access this new virtual reality therapy, but it has been tested in hospitals here. Hope that helps!
