Hello,
I have moderate smoldering myeloma with recent tests indicating it is progressing. I will likely be having chemotherapy next year.
Is nausea a side effect that is always expected during treatment for multiple myeloma? Do anti-nausea tablets help? Is the nausea debilitating?

Treatments and each patients reactions to them are very individual. I was on cyclophosphamide (Cytoxan), Velcade (bortezomib), and dexamethasone (CyBorD) for my induction, and never had any nausea, but I am sure you would find many patients where that was not their experience. My doctors always included Zofran (ondansetron) with each weekly injection, so I am sure that helped.
I wouldn't worry about it to much, they have many different types of medications for nausea that they can prescribe. Just don't suffer in silence, let them know right away when you are not feeling well.

It will depend on what drugs they go with, but the current commonly used first line myeloma treatments such as Revlimid, Velcade, and dexamethasone don't usually cause nausea as a side effect. Cytoxan is known for causing nausea, but I don't think most places use it as a first line treatment now (if you're not in the U.S., then that may not be the case - I don't know).
Of course, Revlimid, dexamethasone, etc. have their own side effects, but nausea isn't generally one of them.
