My husband was recently diagnosed with multiple myeloma. He had a creatinine level as high as 6.6. He now is lingering in the 3.8-4.2 area. They feel that his kidney function will improve. We are not sure given that he is in the 3rd cycle of treatment.
Looking for any one that has experienced significant changes in kidney function during or after treatment.
Also - did you go on special renal diet during this time of transition?

Re: Myeloma + kidney involvement - changes after treatment?
When I was in the hospital, my Creatinine was 7.6. By the time I got out of the hospital, I was under 4 and after around 5-6 maintenance, I dance around 1.1-1.3. I'd tell you keep an eye on your husband and stay after him about drinking lots of fluids. I never went on a renal diet. Hope this helps.

My creatinine was in the 7 range when I was first diagnosed and I was on dialysis for 5 months until my creatinine dropped to 3. I have Bence Jones and the kidney problem is a result the light chains literally clogging them up I was told. I did follow a loose renal diet to keep some pressure off my kidneys.
There is a lot of information on the National Kidney Foundation web site.

Re: Myeloma + kidney involvement - changes after treatment?
Hi Wayne,
My mom was diagnosed with myeloma in July as a result of acute renal failure. She's currently on dialysis 3 times a week. She's taking Velcade and it seems to really be working, however, her creatinine level is still around 6. Did your kidneys come back after around 5 months? Are you no longer on dialysis? Any info would be greatly appreciated. Also any words of advice are welcome too.
Thanks,
Mike

Re: Myeloma + kidney involvement - changes after treatment?
mg31 I had to push a little to get off of dialysis because there seems to be a mentality in that business to hold on to you as long as possible. I had to miss some treatments after I had seemingly leveled out at 3, this took 5 months, and after missing my creatinine didn't rise. I opted under protest to take a week off of dialysis and my creatinine dropped to 2.7 and I stopped at that point. I have no idea if my experience is typical though.
I have hovered around 1.5 for the last 4 years since then.
The whole process of fighting this disease is long term and gains are slow in coming. It took me 17 months from diagnosis to recovering from my SCT to take a deep breath again.
