Hi All
My brother has been diagnosed with multiple myeloma and we just received information that his bone marrow has 50% plasma cells. Previous test show M protein level at 40 g/l (4.0 g/dL).
Hematologist that we have been referred to is not a myeloma expert and going through this site and user comments I understand finding right specialist is key to improvement.
I would request all of you to please help me in finding a myeloma expert in Perth Australia.
Thanks
Vikas

Re: Multiple myeloma specialist - Perth, Australia
Hello Vikas,
From what I've seen in the past online, I believe there is at least one myeloma specialist at the Royal Perth Hospital.
Please let us know what you find out, since the information would be useful to other people who come to the forum looking for this sort of information.

Hello Vikas,
Most myeloma experts are involved directly or indirectly in stem cell transplantation. The Royal Perth Hospital has a stem cell transplant unit. They are a member of the European Bone Marrow Transplant Society which is generally a sign of expert care. I would seek out a myeloma doctor at that institution.

Best of luck for your brother !

Re: Multiple myeloma specialist - Perth, Australia
There are a few options I can think of.
Dr. Bradley Augustson at the Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital is probably the physician in the area who focuses the most on myeloma and related plasma cell disorders. You'll find him listed on the staff of the Haematology unit at the hospital:
http://www.scgh.health.wa.gov.au/OurServices/CancerCentre/Haematology/Patient/index.html
I believe he also maintains a private practice in the area.
Aside from Dr. Augustson, things are a bit fuzzy. The transplant service that used to be at the Royal Perth has now been transferred, I believe, to the Fiona Stanley Hospital. So you could call their cancer unit and see who they recommend:

You also could still try the Royal Perth Haematology unit:

Cheers!

I second the recommendation above to see Dr. Bradley Augustson, who I certainly would describe as a myeloma specialist.
