Re: Myeloma specialist recommendation - Michigan or Chicago
I was lucky to be retired and have Medicare, a Medicare Supplement policy, and a Medicare Part D pharma policy. But my transplant was outpatient far from home and lodging is not covered by Medicare. I ran up quite a hotel bill, so much that it part of it became an itemized deduction on my income tax.

Re: Myeloma specialist recommendation - Michigan or Chicago
I'm in Kalamazoo, too. I had excellent care at Mayo Rochester for ASCT in February 2014. In fact, it was the best medical care I've ever had! And good ongoing care from a generalist oncologist at the West Michigan Cancer Center in Kalamazoo. Rochester, MN, is an 8 hour-drive from your home via Chicago. The high speed ferry from Muskegon to Milwaukee (lake Express) is nice, but costs about $90 one way for passengers, and about $90 for the vehicle.
BCBS did not pay for my $30 night lodging at Gift of Life. The ability to do ASCT on an outpatient basis is really nice, but inpatient works well too, no doubt. And I am sure that you can get outstanding care at Chicago or Ann Arbor, too.
PM me if you'd like more info about SW Michigan resources or Mayo.
Thanks,
Wesley

If anyone has a great hematologist in the Chicago area, I would love to know who it is.
