Hi all,
Do myeloma-related lesions the legs and hands cause pain and, if so, is it a lot of pain? How do you differentiate between pain of neuropathy and pain from lesions? How are they to be treated? My dad has lesions in hand and pain and nothing seems to work.

Are you referring to bone lesions or open wounds on your father's legs & hands?
I wonder if he might have shingles? That is a very painful condition that might look like lesions.

Re: Myeloma-related lesions in legs and hands
If you are talking about bone lesions, I have lesions in both of my fibula (small bone next to the tibia in the lower leg). The one in my left leg became extremely painful 2 years ago when I was doing rehab following a left knee replacement. I had to stop therapy, or the exercise that I was doing, on several visits because the pain in one spot in my lower leg became extremely painful. I mentioned it to my oncologist at my next visit, while still getting therapy. He referred me to the radiation oncologist who recommended a short course of radiation to the lesion. I had 6 sessions of radiation. It took a few weeks after the radiation was completed for the pain to go away. Now I only have pain in that spot occasionally and not with much intensity. It usually happens when I've overdone it like walking too much in a day or when I'm overfatigued.
If it's possibly skin lesions from shingles, your father should be seen by a doctor ASAP. Shingles need to be treated with an anti-viral as soon as it is noticed that they are happening. I took 800 mg of acyclovir 4 times a day for 2-3 weeks when I had an outbreak on my face. And, I started as soon as I recognized that the tingling that I was having on my forehead had developed into a line of little blisters. I'm still taking acyclovir 800 mg 2 times a day 3 1/2 years later because the shingles went into one of my eyes and I still have some problems in that eye.
If it might be shingles, call your primary doctor or your oncologist and get seen immediately. In place of that, if you can't be seen, go to the ER. If it is a bone lesion, call your oncologist and report the pain.
All the best,
Nancy in Phila

Good advice, Nancy.
I still take 400 mg acyclovir twice a day, too. I also got shingles before my SCT - very painful.
