Wanna tell ya a bit ‘bout what’s goin on with me
So I did this little rap as you can plainly see
It’s not like I put it out there to get some kinda answer
I’m rappin today bout myeloma, that’s my incurable cancer
Multiple myeloma grows in the plasma of the blood
Attaches to my bones, makes them weak as mud
Sucks out the calcium so my bones begin to crack
Sneezed and broke two ribs, as a matter of fact
I’m on chemo-for-life, however long that may be
Pills and infusions and doctors that I see
Side effects slow me down, can’t hike or bike no more
Get myself worn out from a trip to the grocery store
But, hey, I can read and I can write and tell my tales
I can cook and feed the birds and go out and get the mail
Water our oasis, keep the critters close and happy
Do my daily chores even if I’m feeling crappy
Now people don’t like to talk ‘bout having this disease
Like cancer is their fault, something they did wrong, o puh-lease
Fact is lotsa people get it and there’s many reasons why
It ‘s what it is, no one lives forever, so don’t cry
It might be genetics, might be the chemicals we breathe
Might be GMO foods, might be carried on the breeze
Might be the work we did, might be the alcohol we drank
Lotsa poisons in our bodies, and I ain’t talkin about crank
So what to do if we get a fatal diagnosis
Lay down and go quiet, or maybe smell the roses
We get to make a choice, one day at a time
I chose to write this rap, make a little rhyme
‘Cause there’s happiness and joy if you look all around us
People laughing, people singing, even with arthritis
There’s birds and bees and butterflies on our desert grounds
Bunnies, lizards, blossoms, there’s beauty to be found
So make a choice for joy, your family will feel better
Make each day the best you can even if you’re a bed-wetter
“Cause everybody’s gonna die, some sooner and some later
Cancer, heart stop, car wreck, or bitten by a gator
Yesterday’s a cancelled check, tomorrow’s an I.O.U.
Today’s the cash we’ve got to spend and you know that’s true
So live each day no matter what, be good to those around us
Love their best, don’t fear their worst, and don’t kick up a fuss
When time comes and we have to go, just remember this
Remember all the fun we’ve had, those moments of pure bliss
All the folks who’ve loved us, and all who we love back
I think of them and not the cancer to keep myself on track
When time comes and I close my eyes thinking ‘bout what’s next
Wanna leave this world peacefully and not a messy wreck
So before I die I wanna say, I wanna tell you mugs
Thanks for being in my life, now find somebody to hug.
I mean it now, I really do, I’m gonna keep on buggin
Hard to feel sorry for yourself if you’re busy huggin
So c’mon now, time has come, something old that’s also new
Hug someone that’s nearby, I ain’t leavin til you do.
