Husband, 81, has multiple myeloma after MGUS & SBP

by rechevar on Sat Apr 04, 2015 1:47 am

My husband was followed for MGUS since 2009. Last spring, a solitary bone plasmacytoma (SBP) was found incidentally on MRI of his shoulder. This was treated with radiation. At that time, bone marrow biopsy revealed > 5%, but <10%, plasma cells, so no further treatment was recommended.

Then, in November 2014, he had a pathologic fracture of his clavicle which had to be surgically put back together with a plate and screws. PET scan showed lesions on a couple ribs, femur, hip. At that time, he began chemo of Revlimid / dex, but developed a DVT after 2 doses of dex, so was just left on Revlimid. His numbers have not come down significantly after four cycles of Revlimid, so he will now begin infusions of Kyprolis next week.

Frank is ineligible for transplant due to his age. He was a bodybuilder and health nut his whole life and always took great care of himself. This diagnosis has really thrown us for a loop. He is 81 years old, and, due to the years of heavy weightlifting, has damaged his joints. In addition he has spinal stenosis.

We have traveled the world these past 34 years and are really sorry to see those experiences end. I try to be proactive, doing research on the disease and its treatments. It can be so overwhelming and stressful. We are hopeful that he will have a good response from the Kyprolis.

If anyone has any suggestions for us, we are open! I will read many of the posts here and educate myself further as to what we can expect.

Hi Ronni,

Welcome to the forum. I'm sorry to hear of your husband's diagnosis, but you've come to a great place for information, support, and community.

If you haven't found it already, a useful posting to know about is this one ("Useful links to existing forum discussions") at the top of the Treatments & Side Effects part of the forum. It has a lot of links that will take you to lists of discussions in the forum about different treatments and side effects. It can be very helpful for tracking down information already in the forum:

There also is a list of links at the top of the "News" page on the site that will take you to articles on different treatments and other myeloma-related topics. It also can be helpful.

You also may want to play around with the forum's search function / search box, particularly the advanced search capability. Once you get comfortable with it, it can be helpful for finding existing forum discussions on specific topics. The key thing is to search for keywords, like "neuropathy", rather than phrases like "What is neuropathy?"

I hope your husband does well on the Revlimid and Kyprolis combination. It's an effective regimen.

Good luck!

Ian

Thanks, Ian.

Frank had his second infusion of Kyprolis today preceded by 4 mg of dex. So far, so good. He feels pretty darn good, actually.

Does anyone know if the side effects increase with each infusion or, if there were going to be any, would they be evident right away?

I sure hope it continues like this, but don't want to be naive.

Welcome to The Beacon, it's a great source of information.

Regarding your question about side effects with Kyprolis, I am currently in the middle of my third course of Kyprolis and I have not experienced any adverse effects. I say that with some caution because I was also side effect free last year during my regimen with Velcade until I developed severe peripheral neuropathy during cycle seven.

The effects of these drugs are cumulative, and there is no guarantee that if you are side effect free during early treatment, you will not experience adverse effects later in the treatment cycle.

I wish your husband the best, and I hope he has a positive response to Kyprolis.

Hubby just finished third week of cycle one and is doing really well, all things considered. The dex is also helping his arthritis! We hope this continues. I am anxious to see his labs after this first round. :D
