Myasthenia gravis and multiple myeloma

by Willyc on Sat Aug 22, 2015 11:24 pm

Myasthenia gravis has been part of my life from my early 20's right through until age 65, when the symptoms just went away. Multiple myeloma presented itself at age 72 nearly three years ago. Without going into the boring details of treatment, I'm wondering if anyone else has had the same experience.

Hello William,

Welcome to the forum.

I've seen a few people post here in the forum about having had myasthenia gravis. To be honest, before I read their postings, I had never heard of the disorder. In most of the cases, however, the people who posted had not been diagnosed with MGUS or multiple myeloma, but they were concerned that they might have one of those conditions.

I did find one person, though, who mentioned in some postings that she has both myasthenia gravis and MGUS. See this discussion thread for more details:

"New to the board and new with MGUS" (started Nov 24, 2014)

Cheers!

Ian

At age 58, I was diagnosed with MG, and had a thymectomy to remove a baseball sized benign tumor and the thymus. I was placed on high doses of prednisone and methyltrexate and went into remission. Three years later, I was diagnosed with lambda light chain multiple myeloma after kyphoplasty to repair several fracured disks. My neurologist's comment was, "I sure hope it wasn't caused by the drugs I put you on". I am still in remission from MG, and wonder if that is from the Dex I take.
