My mother's test results

by tonhuger on Tue Aug 20, 2013 5:52 pm

Hello all,

My mother already has osteoporosis and a fatty liver, and high blood pressure. She's 59. She's under control having regular blood tests etc and using medicine for these. Well, last year her doctors decided to send her to hematologist since they saw something wrong in her blood.

Here is her recent test results and I am afraid that she has multiple myeloma. I am very sad since evening, crying. Please help me by looking at these results.

Hello tonhuger,
The laboratory results you have posted do not confirm (or necessarily suggest) a diagnosis of multiple myeloma. I would want to see the results of her serum protein electrophoresis (SPEP), bone marrow biopsy, and Xrays of all of her major bones. The mild elevation in her IgG is non specific. Please keep us informed at the Beacon as to the final results of her evaluation. Hopefully this will not add up to a diagnosis of multiple myeloma.

Thanks a lot. She's been seeing the hematologist for a year and they have only asked for blood tests. Her serum protein electrophoresis results haven't come yet. She'll be seeing the doctor in the next month, I don't know if they ask for biopsy or Xrays. I'll keep you posted. Thanks a lot for your help again, Dr. Libby.

Would need skeletal survey to know if there are bone lesions. Also need quantification of a monoclonal protein. The elevated IgG and IgA levels are more suggestive of a polyclonal hypergammaglobulinemia. But need to make sure there is not a monoclonal protein.

Thanks for your reply... She was told that there is no danger for now, they were just controlling... She's going to be checked again about 3 months later.

Hello all,

My mother already has osteoporosis and a fatty liver, and high blood pressure. She's 60. She's under control having regular blood tests etc and using medicine for these. And for a while, she has been visiting the hematologist for these routine tests.

Here is her recent test results and I am afraid if these results may mean multiple myeloma. She often says that she has leg and foot pain... I don't know if that can be a symptom. She's also fat and feels the pain more after she moves a lot. Thanks in advance.

Re: My mother's test results

by Dr. Jatin Shah on Wed Aug 27, 2014 9:46 pm

Dear tonhuger,

Thanks for the update.

Has your mother had a bone marrow biopsy or x-ray of her bones. A bone marrow biopsy would be helpful.

Myeloma typically does not affect small bones of the feet, but rather long bones. That's why x-rays would be useful.

Also, the elevated IgA, IgG, free kappa and free lambda light chains suggest a polyclonal increase, suggestive NOT of myeloma, but rather an inflammatory or infectious process.

Thank you very much for the answer.

She hasn't had a bone marrow biopsy but recently she has had a bone densitometry and it came out fine: she has osteoporosis in her hip bone and it is the same as it was before, they said. There is no negative progression.

What kind of other diseases or problems can she have with these test results? Should we be worried?

Hello,

My mother already has osteoporosis, a fatty liver, Vitamin D deficiency and high blood pressure. She's 62 and over weighted. She's under control having regular blood tests etc and using medicine for these, under the controls of endocrinology and gastroenterology. She says she sometimes has leg pains due to tiredness. Here is her recent test results:

I don't understand. Is she at risk?

Thanks.
