My mother (N Pushpavalli) fought the myeloma with greatest spirit and a very high positive attitude. Even at terminal last stages, she had confidence that she would survive by miracle, but finally succumbed to the disease with cardiac arrest.
Myeloma attacked her in December 2010. She started treatment only in May 2011 due to a wrong diagnosis. Due to multiple tumors in the bones, doctors initially refused to give treatment, thinking she had unknown metastasis. She had confidence that she would overcome that time and she survived for 4.5 years. She had 4 relapses of myeloma. During 4th relapse in January 2016, her body refused to cooperate, though she was mentally very positive. Finally she lost the battle on February 12, 2016, after suffering from thrombocytopenia for last few days.
Even during worst times in her life (for side effects of chemo), she always had a smiling face. Her relentless fight against the disease with braveness was a constant source of inspiration for few doctors in the hospital.
We are living in India, we don't have access to the latest drugs introduced after 2010, like Pomalyst, Kyprolis (carfilzomib), etc., with government subsided prices. If these drugs would have been available now, my mom would have survived another few more years. Attending this gap between developed / developing countries will save hundreds of lives like my mom. This is the ruthless reality.
Often my mind laments that she is just 60 years when she left all of us. But with famous quote, "Life is like a box of chocolates, you never know what you are gonna get," I am trying to console myself. Life is a mystery, tomorrow is a new day, and no one knows exactly what will happen next. Each box of chocolates is different, and there is no way of knowing what is in each chocolate until bitten into.
Thanks
Vijay

Vijay-
I'm sorry to read that your mother passed from this world. She was fortunate to have raised such a loving son who did all that he could to educate himself about myeloma so that he could help his mother with this disease. Your tribute to her and all of the posts asking your questions were evidence of what a wonderful woman, mother, and wife she was. Know that she appreciated all of your efforts. Continue to remember her in the loving way that you shared with us.
Be at peace for your mother is at peace,
Nancy in Phila
