Understanding my husband's test results

by Jo Anne on Mon Jul 06, 2015 3:18 am

Is there an explanation someplace for the information that I am seeing on my husband's various test results? I would like to understand the bone marrow pathology report (e.g. is there an explanation out there explaining the cell numbers on the pathology report, etc.) and what all of the items on the CBC and CMP are and which items are critical in reference to multiple myeloma.

Hi Jo Anne,

There is a lot to try to learn, all of a sudden, when you or someone you care for gets diagnosed with multiple myeloma. It's like learning a whole new language.

There are a couple of things I would suggest. One is to post the test results that you have questions about here in the Beacon forum. There are a lot of smart people who read and reply to posts here! Most likely, they can answer the questions you have, including helping you interpret the bone marrow report, which certainly can seem like it's written in a very foreign language.

The other thing you can do is check out this publication, which is a good starting point for learning about various myeloma tests.

My two suggestions are not mutually exclusive, by the way. ;-)

Best wishes to you and your husband.

Mike

The alphabet soup we see on test results is a foreign language. Most of us have our own from our own life.

I've used Internet searches with great success by just typing them in and skimming the references.

Another is if you have a clinic-related website where you can find your test results. Ours is "MyChart". Often it will have a link in the test results page that will explain what the results tell us. If you haven't used this tool, ask your nurse to help you register.

Best of luck to you.

Valentine
