Hi Billjr
I also had no radiation with my SCT in September and am wondering are you talking about an allogenic transplant when you talk about other persons immune system.
ScottH hope your symptoms have improved and was wondering when you had your transplant and how long recovery did take. I was doing stretching and strengthening exercises from about 3 weeks after transplant but let it slide in favour of biking and swimming. But my body feels wrecked with muscle pain and as you say, walking is painful and muscles all over are tender.
After reading this post I have restarted stretching and strengthening exercises but plan to continue with biking and swimming as I don't have a problem with pain doing these activities.
Have also found my resting heart rate is 80-90 since transplant and know I can reduce this with exercise.
I had no problems with taking dex prior to SCT and exercised (biking) through that time to keep up fitness.
Starting back at work next month so need to work on endurance to make the grade. Walking and heavy lifting involved.

Re: Muscle soreness after autologous stem cell transplant?
Hello,
Yes, dex is a catabolic steroid. It elevates myostatin, a key regulator of muscle growth. I do recall during my first treatment getting dex for 18 months. I was very achy at times. Thank goodness no radiation for you! I do recall feeling pretty well while I was in remission. The effects of the dex wore off over time.

Re: Muscle soreness after autologous stem cell transplant?
Thank you NZMum. I don't remember exactly how long it took to improve, but it was several months. Probably close to a year actually. I had my ASCT in June of 2012 and I remember being at MIRT in Arkansas (ironically enough) (I live in Ohio) the summer of 2013 during part of my son-in-law's treatment for Hodgkins' lymphoma and I specifically remember the ramps and stairs were rough. I sure hope you find relief soon!!
That particular muscle pain is gone but I don't expect to ever feel like I did pre transplant. I still have general aches and pains and low stamina/energy, but we all react differently to treatment. My wife had an ASCT for NHL back in July and is now dealing with the same type pains. She was also on dex, although not as long as I was.
It felt exactly the same way it does after a strenuous workout ... without the workout.
Thank you billjr. I am very thankful that I haven't had to have any radiation at all.

Hi, my leg muscles are sore 3 months after SCT. Still ride my bike. Hoping the soreness will go away after time!

Re: Muscle soreness after autologous stem cell transplant?
I am 41 days post Auto stem cell transplant and I am glad to read that muscle soreness in thighs is not uncommon. Mine have really been sore as my energy returns I'm trying to walk more. My Myeloma lesions were on my left thigh left forearm and skull. My thigh and forearm hurt worse than ever but I feel a lot better when I walk so I will just deal with it. I will mention it at my next Dr appointment. I have received so much encouragement reading how active you 90 day post people are doing. Gives me lots of hope to returning to my active self!
