Hello
I had a stem cell transplant in August of this year and since that time I have been experiencing muscle and nerve pain. Regardless of which muscle I use, I encounter some degree of discomfort behind my eyes, jaw, arms, legs, fingers etc.
I started to get numbness in my right hand when I sleep and decided to start physical therapy.
I am blaming the majority of my discomfort on the transplant because I didn't experience this prior to having it. The good news is it seems to be subsiding (other than the numbness in my hand) and when a storm seems to be moving in then I really ache.
Is it common to have muscle pain after the transplant? If you have experienced muscle pain, has it stopped or is this something I may deal with for the rest of my life?
I am hoping others might be willing to share their stories of how they have dealt with this.
Thank you,
Rhonda

I started a thread on muscle soreness after my transplant. Here it is:

Re: Muscle pain after stem cell transplant
I am on Day 74 after an autologous stem cell transplant and I have terrible muscle pain in my legs. I feel like a just ran a marathon. I do walk most days and have very gradually built up to three quarters of a mile (1.2 km).
I don't think that my walking can account for the terrible pain. I'm also wondering if this sort of pain is common at this point after a transplant and, if so, what the cause is.

Re: Muscle pain after stem cell transplant
I'm on day 10 after my stem cell transplant and muscle pain in my legs is substantial. I'm in great shape physically with the exception of having myeloma. I'm walking daily. I cope with the pain by walking, icing, and stretching. They say to take codeine, but I feel it could be a vitamin or mineral imbalance. I going to push them today for more answers.

I had leg muscle soreness after my transplant. Walking is good, but of course it is weight-bearing, so more fatiguing than other forms of exercise. You may want to try the bike or the pool.

I also had severe muscle pain, you may want to ask them to check your vitamin D levels. I ended up being severely deficient and have to take a high-dose pill weekly. I understand that this is relatively common in myeloma patients. It definitely helped me with the cramps and pain.

There also is a forum thread "Muscle cramps" where many people wrote in to describe what they do for cramps. I had those sometimes when on Revlimid, and took extra strength Tylenol (acetaminophen / paracetamol) for the pain, which helped. I also take a vitamin D tablet and multivitamins daily for my general health.
