Mum seems to be rapidly declining

by Munchkin poppet on Wed Oct 15, 2014 4:46 pm

Hi, my mum has had multiple myeloma for around 8 years now. She had a stem cell transplant, which did not last that long, so the doctors said, but refused a second one as it would take too much out of her.

She has had lots of different chemo over the years, but now we feel we need to prepare ourselves. She has become very weak, frail, grey in colour and not really with it when you talk to her. She is very sleepy, she still goes out maybe once a week via taxi to the supermarket (really don't know how she manages it).

She had a fall today and she was on the floor for 6 hours before anyone got to her. We are hoping to talk to her go tomorrow to voice our concerns as she lives alone.

I'm just wondering if this sounds like the end is near for my mum so we can try at least to prepare ourselves a little better. :( xx

Dear Munchkin poppet,

Sorry to hear about your mother's condition.

Do you know if it is multiple myeloma causing the problems or side effects of the medication? Or could it be something completely different - maybe not multiple myeloma related?

What treatment is she on, is the multiple myeloma progressing? What are the physicians saying about the situation and the cause?

Greetings

Hi Lev,

I'm sure my mum's on Revlimid, which she has been on for about a year now, and she has definitely had Velcade previously, and before that, one I can't remember.

She also has COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease).

Her myeloma is progressing again as she has noticed more lumps appear. We are waiting on a MRI scan.

Her blood pressure is low and breathing is very laboured. Also she is very slow to walk about now and has lost so much weight; her appetite is not good now, neither is her fluid intake.
