I've been at it for over twelve years now with really no downtime. I've been through 3 mainstream treatments as well as 2 auto stem cell transplants (in 2004 and 2009) and am doing pretty well. Currently I get infused with Velcade and dexamethasone once per week, and it seems to be holding things at bay again. I was 43 at diagnosis and had 6 and 11 year old children and watched my youngest graduate high school this last June. That was something I didn't anticipate when I had my first discussion with my oncologist.
Hope this helps,
Allen

Re: Is multiple myeloma really treatable for years?
I'd say it really varies from person to person as to how their disease is presented and also how well they can tolerate some of the treatments. My doctor says that they are just trying to get it under control so that we can treat the symptoms, there currently is no cure.
I'm looking forward to next week when I'm scheduled for 5 radiation treatments. Hopefully, that will relieve some of my pain. But there are no guarantees, it is as you say, One Day At A Time! One foot in front of the other, we'll get there!

Gary and Allen,
Thanks for replying. Allen, yours is a story to strive for, and Gary, yes, I hope my husband can tolerate treatments well and I hope your pain is relieved soon.
