Multiple myeloma specialists in Sacramento area?
I live in Sacramento and I have all the signs of multiple myeloma. I want to make sure I have the best possible doctors taking care of me. Can you please help me find doctors in the Sacramento area who are multiple myeloma specialists? Please help if you can. Thanks.

Worried,
Welcome to the forum.
Why do you specifically think you have multiple myeloma?

Re: Multiple myeloma specialists in Sacramento area?
Hi Worried,
I'll echo Multibilly's question, but also add that there are some previous discussions here in the forum that should help find a myeloma specialists in your general area. You can find most of them by doing a search from the forum search box on "California" and also "Francisco".
Here are a couple I found that should help:
"Myeloma specialists in Los Angeles / San Francisco areas?", forum disc. started Jun 25, 2014
"Myeloma treatment centers in northern California?," forum disc. started Aug 7, 2014.
There are not many myeloma specialists in the United States. Your average hematologist-oncologist is not necessarily a myeloma specialist, which is a doctor who sees almost only myeloma patients and usually also does research related to multiple myeloma.
There are probably only one or two true myeloma specialists in the immediate Sacramento area, and probably about 10 down in the Bay Area.
If you follow the advice provided in the discussions I mentioned above, you should be in good hands.

Re: Multiple myeloma specialists in Sacramento area?
I live up near Auburn and drive to Sacramento to see my hematologist / medical oncologist . He isn't a myeloma specialist, but he has many myeloma patients and I've always been treated with the latest drugs, treatments etc.
To answer your question, though, there is not a myeloma specialist in Sacramento; the closest is in San Francisco (Dr. Wolf at UCSF) and Stanford. You would need to travel there to be seen.

Hello (Worried) Christina,
Please look up the UC Davis faculty and you'll find at least one of their medical oncologists, specializing in leukemia, lymphoma and multiple myeloma at par with anyone else at Stanford or UCSF, at least based on the number of publications. As much as I know, this oncologist treats over 100-150 myeloma patients every year and holds 'hands on' clinics, which is quite rare for university faculty.
Since my physician wife works where such weekly clinics are held, I feel uncomfortable mentioning any names. However, I have been getting second-hand confirmation that my own treatment from my oncologist at my HMO is just about perfect.

To K_Shash,
Thank you so much for your very helpful response. I am not sure I understand your response correctly. Do you mean that you are seeing a different hematologist, but also attend some classes with the UC Davis hematologist?

Re: Multiple myeloma specialists in Sacramento area?
Hi K_Shash,
It is my understanding that UC Davis does have a leukemia, myeloma and other blood cancers center, but I do not think there is a specialist as such. I think (I could be wrong) that they are hematologist / medical oncologists.
If you know someone, I'd be extremely interested in their name.
I have looked up UC Davis obviously since I live close, but that's all I found.
Can you elaborate?
Thanks,
Christina

Re: Multiple myeloma specialists in Sacramento area?
Hello Christina,
Please look up (Prof.) Dr. Welborne on the UC Davis website.
You will see that she specializes in cytogenetics, an important factor in myeloma treatment options. I believe Dr. Welborne has 35+ publications to her credit. And if I had any doubt about my treatment, she would be the one I would officially consult for a second opinion.
Dr. Welborne is a 'hands on' oncologist and personally attends clinics, a task often left to residents and fellows by the "experts".

Re: Multiple myeloma specialists in Sacramento area?
Thanks for the info.
As I've stated before, my hematologist / oncologist is with Mercy Cancer Center and is a very conscientious guy. But I'd like to get a second opinion sometime this year. So that is great info.
By the way, I hope you're feeling better (just read your other post)! Are you planning to go thru an autologous stem cell transplant?
It's tough going thru all the beginning stuff.

Re: Multiple myeloma specialists in Sacramento area?
I was diagnosed back in 2012 and have received all of my care through UC Davis. I've been happy with the care I've received. My doctors have both been fellows who work under supervising hematologists. Both have been very knowledgeable and seem to be on top of things. I went to Dr. Wolf at UC San Francisco (UCSF) for a second opinion and he indicated that he found their approach to be sound and similar to what they do at UCSF, although not identical.
I had my auto transplant at UC Davis and was quite happy with it. Dr. Toscano was the transplant guy.
If you're only looking for a second opinion, I'd go with Dr. Wolf. My understanding is that he's a highl regarded myeloma specialist and it's well worth the trip out to San Francisco.
