A year and a half ago, my "score" given by my oncologist was 2600. Now, after Velcade and Kyprolis treatments, he says that the blood test shows a "score" of 119. These scores don't seem to jibe with what I have been reading. Could someone help interpret for me?

Re: Multiple myeloma "scores"
Hi Bob:
I have never heard of a doctor using simple, single "scores" like this, without an explanation. He/she could be referring to multiple test results that myeloma patients get routinely; your immunoglobulin's (IgA, IgM, IgG), or possibly your light chain numbers (kappa, lambda, and kappa-lambda ratio). I can't imagine that your M-spike was 2600, unless he is using a very odd measuring system.
Do you get an actual copy of your test results? If not, I would highly recommend getting copies, and having him explain each of the results to you. If you would rather not have him / her explain them, you could post the results here, There are many very knowledgeable people on this forum who can help you decipher the numbers.
Best of luck to you.
Kathleen

Re: Multiple myeloma "scores"
Hi Bob,
Kathleen is right. You should get copies of all your lab reports and have the doctor explain all of the results.
Given your range of numbers and the doctor primarily citing this one number, my best guess is that you have IgA-type multiple myeloma and that your "score" is your IgA level. With IgA-type myeloma, one tends to rely more on the IgA figure instead of the m-spike figure. If so, this is a very excellent response to treatment. But you really need to confirm this with your doc.
