Hello,
I am wondering about others' experience with other cancers in addition to myeloma.
I notice in this thread that a few people said that they had previously been treated for breast cancer, but I cannot find anything else talking about this issue (aside from the cancers known to be caused by chemo, such as ALL).
Does anyone know if other solid tumor cancers are in any way caused or influenced by myeloma or its treatment? Or are myeloma patients simply at the same risk as the rest of the population for lung, colon, breast, etc. cancers?

Re: Multiple myeloma & risk of other cancers
Several studies have demonstrated that patients with myeloma or even MGUS have a higher baseline risk of developing bone marrow cancers such as myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS) or acute myeloid leukemia (AML), and that this risk may be increased further by treatment with melphalan and, in some settings, Revlimid (lenalidomide) maintenance.
The data about solid tumors in myeloma patients is less well-established, though studies do suggest a slightly higher incidence of common solid tumors like prostate or breast cancer. I'm not aware of convincing data that particular myeloma treatments impact this risk.
Myeloma patients should undergo standard age-appropriate cancer screenings (e.g. mammograms, colonoscopy, etc.), as recommended by their physicians.

Re: Multiple myeloma & risk of other cancers
I came down with multiple myeloma in 2004 and then about 2.5 years ago came down with prostate cancer. I was operated on and my PSA reading dropped from 10 to 0.005. Things went well till about 6 months ago, when my PSA reading started going up again, and it reached 7. I was put on a series of shots that I get every 4 months. Seems to be working so far, as the PSA reading currently is below 1.

Re: Multiple myeloma & risk of other cancers
I got stomach cancer after stem cell transplant, either from chemo given for transplant or from Protonix (pantoprazole) (they had me on for 3 years). Supposed to be a 6 weeks study.

Re: Multiple myeloma & risk of other cancers
My multiple myeloma specialist says he sees a link with melanoma and multiple myeloma. I followed his advice and had a screening by a dermatologist and he found a melanoma. Fortunately, it was early stage.
My dermatologist says cancer suppresses the immune system and therefore we are more likely to develop secondary cancers.
