Can myeloma-related kidney (renal) damage be reversed?

by Sun45 on Sun Jan 15, 2017 11:37 am

My parent is at the 5 year milestone. Two autologous stem cell transplants plus recipient of almost all the options. Has had many remissions and feeling good in between. Darzalex didn't work its magic. During the Darzalex, the monster came back and surprised us and the doctor with kidney damage for the first time! Creatinine went from normal to 3.5 The infamous myeloma kidney!

Crazy last week was his first blood transfusion ever!

He's now on Kyprolis (carfilzomib), thalidomide, cyclophosphamide, and dexamethasone. Taking it like a champ! Had a renal consult. They won't act unless creatinine hits 5.

If the new treatment works, is it possible that the kidney damage will be reversed? Or will it be permanent?

None of us have a crystal ball, but we definitely find comfort in hearing perspectives on this issues.

Grateful for all the miracles that have gotten us this far.

My myeloma was discovered when I went into kidney failure in September 2014. I asked my doctor if my kidneys would recover and he just shrugged and said he didn't know. So, I resigned myself to living with kidney damage, switched to a kidney-friendly diet, etc. My creatinine level improved during treatment for my multiple myeloma, but I was totally blindsided when, three months after diagnosis, the doctor told me my creatinine level was back into normal range. So yes, it is possible.

Since my parent's new multiple myeloma treatment started, his creatinine has dropped 1.5 points in one week. Great news today.

My father was diagnosed at Christmas, 2016 with severe renal issues. Each treatment has improved his creatinine numbers, so we are very hopeful that his kidneys will improve as treatment continues.

Good luck to you.

When my husband was first diagnosed, he was almost to the stage of needing temporary dialysis. His creatinine was 5.0 and his was reversed. So yes, it can.

Thanks so much for sharing. His creatinine is now back up to 3.6 again in 1 week.

He is asymptomatic. The understandable anxiety he has is so hard to watch. As his daughter, I just don't know what I can do to help him emotionally.

In 5 years, this is new to us. I wonder why they wait until 5 to act (dialysis) if it's trending up so fast. Does it peak and trough?

Good vibes to all. Thank you.
