multiple myeloma and Renal Failure

by summit on Thu May 09, 2013 2:29 pm

I was wondering if anyone has the same issue - renal failure with multiple myeloma. It's a month that kidneys failed due to large calcium levels. Creatinine is high still. On therapy at this moment and just wondering what prognosisi may be.

Hi summit. Sorry to hear about your kidney failure. Unfortunately, it's a pretty common problem for MMers. But it can often be reversed after starting myeloma therapy.

There are a number of related forum discussions about myeloma and kidney disease that you might find helpful:

And the Beacon has published a number of articles about myeloma kidney disease, what treatments help, and which hurt:

This one's about an interesting type of dialysis that can improve your kidney function. You may want to ask your docs if they can do it:

Hello from Seattle Summit,
Renal dysfunction and/or failure are common in multple myeloma.
In recent years, the prognosis of patients with myeloma and kidney injury is improving because our treatments for myeloma are better. Ultimately the prognosis depends on whether or not you have to be on dialysisis long term. In 2013 most patients (84% in one recent study) have improvement in their kidney function particularly if they are able to get a bortezomib based treatment. Bortezomib is the drug of choice in myeloma sssociated renal failure. Most of the improvement in kidney function will occur in the first few weeks or months of treatment .
I wish you the best of luck in your fight with this terrible disease.
