Multiple myeloma secondary to acute myeloid leukemia?

by tracydyer on Fri May 15, 2015 2:08 am

Hello,

I have searched and searched, both scholarly and lay articles, for anything that might answer this question: Could multiple myeloma occur (either concurrently or) secondary to acute myeloid leukemia (AML)?

Mother, age 74, was diagnosed with AML six months ago. At precisely the same time, she began experiencing intermittent severe pain in her shoulder. It has worsened over time, increasing in severity and spreading to her forearm and hand. The entire arm and hand has become immobile and useless. An MRI showed 'abnormal mass of marrow cells' in the shoulder, and she began radiation therapy on the entire arm a few days ago.

The question of whether Mother has a second type of cancer, or whether this is just a normal part of AML, has not been addressed by her team, leaving me to scour the Internet. In my feeble search, I have learned about myeloma and find extraordinary similarities in the symptoms you good folks describe, and my mother's. Namely, excruciating bone pain, and fatigue. However I am unable to find any links whatsoever to AML and multiple myeloma or any other bone cancer. (I did find one study linking multiple myeloma to CLL, but that is so different from AML.)

Any help is greatly appreciated. I thank you for your time and wish the very best to each of you.

This is a stretch of time, but I thought I'd reply and am wondering what you found out if anything about your mom.

I began treatment for multiple myeloma beginning in late 2013. In August of this year I was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia but I still have some residual myeloma. The two specialists I've seen both say they have seen other cases of this happening, but rarely. Now I'm doing the web searching, looking for info about others who have had a similar experience.

My current treatment is for ALL, not multiple myeloma.
