Three small IgG kappa bands on immunofixation - meaning?

by Niki on Thu Sep 18, 2014 3:56 pm

Dear friends,

I would like to ask a question about my latest immunofixation (IFE) results. My lab tests result is positive for IgG kappa (3 small bands IgG kappa ). What could that 3 small bands mean and what is the clinical significance? All my other exams are negative for myeloma except that.

Thank you in advance.

Best regards
Niki

Presuming that your initial disease was IgG kappa, this probably simply means you have barely detectable disease -- a 'near complete remission' (nCR) if the M-spike is zero. The 3 separate bands are of questionable meaning. It could be that the clonal pattern on immunofixation is just a bit less defined or blurred. It could also mean that there is more then one 'sister' clone detectable.

This probably has very little in the way of clinical meaning, but reviewing the actual picture of the immunofixation with your doctor may help you visualize the situation better.

Thank you Dr. Hoffman,

My initial disease was kappa. There wasn't an intact immunoglobulin in the immunofixation pattern. Could that be important?
