Multiple ASCT - low platelet counts

My husband was treated with heavy doses of chemo for 10 months and received 3 ASCT during that time. He is in remission and went on VRD maintenance in April of 2013. He only completed one round due to undetermined infection and continuous low platelet counts. Doc had to take him off all maintenance and platelets continue in the 20-40 range. Now doc is going to try a fourth ASCT without the chemo. Anyone else out there had more than two sct and has anyone had one without chemo?

I don't understand how he could have so many asct in such a short period of time
