I’m 85 days post autologous stem cell transplant and generally feeling real good. However, for the past 1 1/2 weeks, I just can’t get my right ear to pop or equalize. There's no pain or dizziness, or sinus / throat problems. Lately there's been some mild tingling in my face and a little numbness by right ear.
I am seeing my hematologist next week Wednesday, and I've also scheduled an appointment with my primary care physician. But I'm wondering if this sort of issue happens often after stem cell transplants.

Re: Hearing issue (muffled hearing) after stem cell transpla
Hi Bo808,
I was wondering if you learned anything more about the cause of your hearing issue.
My suspicion is that the source of the problem is a blockage in your Eustachian tubes on the side of your head where you're having problems. If the issue were nerve related, I think it would tend to affect hearing in both ears, not just one.
There are some forum threads on hearing-related issues people have had during treatment, and I think some of the postings in the threads may be helpful to you. See this link for a list of potentially helpful discussions.

Re: Hearing issue (muffled hearing) after stem cell transpla
Having just dealt with sudden idiopathic hearing loss (which I don't believe is related to my smoldering myeloma), I can tell you that an otologist (not a GP) can run some tests that can quickly narrow down the likely nature of the hearing loss, whether it be a blocked Eustachian tube, nerve damage, mechanical impairment, cochlea-related issues, etc. A GP can only tell if there are some obvious blockages in the external ear (up until the ear drum), or see if the eardrum generally looks OK, and can do some very basic hearing loss measurement tests, but that's about it.

If you have a blockage in the ear, I can seriously recommend micro suction. Obviously, an ENT specialist is best to advise.
