Mud baths or hot springs for myeloma-related pain?
Just a question my dad wanted me to ask: Is it possible to get relief from myeloma-related pain by taking in mud baths, mineral hot springs, etc?

Hi Little Monkey,
I believe that the application of warmth and heat can help to reduce the intensity of pain, especially if it is localised. My personal preference is to position a hot water bottle where the pain is and it generally gives a rapid relief. Perhaps heat helps to dilate the blood vessels, thus enabling my rather thick blood to flow better, or perhaps the sensation of heat simply masks the pain to a degree and breaks the cycle of pain-stress-pain. I would imagine the hot springs or mud baths would help for similar reasons, but I am a little dubious as to whether they would be any better than simply using normal hot water or more conventional sources of heat. I live in an area of hot springs which have attracted many sick people over hundreds of years, even from Roman times. I am sure they would not have kept visiting if there had not been some benefits.

Yes, if my dad does go to mineral hot springs for treatment, it would possibly be in Europe, where he is from originally. There aren't any hot mineral springs in this part of Canada were we live, although Canada does have hot springs about 3000 km from us in British Columbia and Alberta.

Mud baths and hot springs obviously attract sick people, and the venues are ripe with pathogens. Myeloma patients are at risk of infection due to our compromised immunity. Why put yourself at risk when a heating pad or a soak in your own bath tub will probably gain the same level of relief?
