Hello. This is my first time on the forum and I wanted to talk about my father. I am quite worried he is near the end. He is now on Kyprolis and is non responsive to Revlimid, Velcade, or Pomalyst. In December, he suffered from acute kidney failure due to hypercalcemia. He recovered and was released after about 1 week. Two days after this, he was re-admitted with pneumonia, spent another 3 days in the hospital, but he also came out OK. Since Christmas he has received 10 radiation treatments for rib tumors, and began taking Kyprolis IV.
Everything seemed "ok" until he developed an infection this week that was not responding to antibiotics. He was admitted again with almost complete collapse of his bronchial tubules, but responded to high level breathing treatments.
I just found out last night that the doctors believe he may have MRSA and is being tested. Is this the end?? His light chains and IgG are off the chart, and he has several rib fractures and countless lesions.
Thanks in advance for all your comments. I am honestly quite lost right now.

Re: MRSA and multiple myeloma - is this the end?
I'm sorry for what you are going thru. Obviously we can't actually answer your question. But, there have been many stories of people recovering after being diagnosed in the latter stages. And MRSA is a treatable illness. It sounds like your dad is in good hands. I will keep him in my thoughts for a good fight and recovery.

Hi Sciencegeek,
Cindlylouise is spot on with both of her comments. Don't give up hope even though this situation may seem overwhelming at this moment.
May I inquire as to where your pop is being treated? It sounds like he is already working with a multiple myeloma specialist, but a second opinion from a top multiple myeloma specialist might provide some beneficial ideas for tweaks or changes to the current therapy that weren't considered before.

Hi. I caught MRSA while I was in the hospital receiving my stem cell transplant. I was very sick with MRSA and the effects of the stem cell transplant. That was July 2013 and today I am in remission and doing great. I will pray for you and your family.

Re: MRSA and multiple myeloma - is this the end?
Thanks for all the replies. He was just released from the hospital yesterday, with still no results from the MRSA test. I'm guessing it was negative if they let him leave. They also plan on continuing his Kyprolis treatments today.
He may have broken another rib, just from coughing, after he got home, and he said his pain has gotten much worse on his other side. Hopefully the doctors are going to give some more information today. While I am not able to go with him (I live about 400 miles away), I think he is worried to find out too many details and is purposely not asking the doctors questions.
He is getting treated through a subsidiary of Karmanos Cancer Center in Detroit.
