Hi, so I haven't been here in a while, but have a question about my husband's recent MRI of his spine and pelvis. It says mild marrow inhomogeneity in the pelvis may represent mild diffuse myelomatous disease.
Not really sure what this means, and of course these results became available after office hours Friday. Any insight is appreciated.

Re: MRI says "mild marrow inhomogeneity"?
I know this is pretty vague. MRI was obtained during a routine 3 month check up, due to increased low back pain. I think when you are going in to a long weekend, the only results you are hoping for are those that say, clearly, that all is good. Maybe that's what this says. I am currently just mildly concerned.

Hi Cindy,
Nice to see you back here again.
Does your husband get an MRI of this particular area on a regular basis? If so, is the result / interpretation this time any different than it's been in the past?

Thank you, and no, he's never had an MRI on his spine or pelvis before. The spinal MRI seems fine.
I want this to be nothing, although nothing just hasn't been in the cards for us the last 4 years. So not good at the waiting game.

Re: MRI says "mild marrow inhomogeneity"?
I had two spinal MRIs which led to my diagnosis and then two during my transplants. The transplant MRIs are called "bone marrow/ whole body's" MRIs. The myeloma measurement of activity in all 4 studies was a measuring of marrow signal intensity. I have not heard your term before.

Re: MRI says "mild marrow inhomogeneity"?
Hello again CindyLouise,
Too bad there isn't a previous MRI to compare the latest one to. I would think it would make it easier to figure out whether the "mild diffuse myelomatous disease" is something new, or a remnant of disease that your husband previously had in that area.
Basically, I think there are two possibilities. The first is that is that this is a new area of myeloma activity, and the second is that it's a holdover from previous activity. I really don't know whether the second is really a possibility. But if it is, they may decide to do a PET/CT, or maybe biopsy the area, to investigate it further.
Has there been any change in your husband's M-spike or free light chain levels recently that might suggest that the spot on the MRI is new myeloma activity? If his labs haven't really changed, I would take that as a good sign.
I hope it turns out to be nothing to be worried about. Good luck!
