Does all MRD [minimal residual disease] testing require a comparison sample from the original bone marrow biopsy?

Re: MRD testing
Hi Bair:
From my reading I understand that an MRD test is done on the aspirate that is taken from the bone marrow biopsy. Each time you do the test, it is a snapshot of the MRD status at that time. You do not need to have any other older sample to perform the test and get the valid result, but you do want to compare with prior results, if they are available.
If you are asking whether or not you can go back to a past BMB and ask them the MRD status, that is a very interesting question that I am not sure of. If they have the sample, it might be possible to do so, you would have to ask, but it would only make sense to do that if you were 0% involvement in the bone marrow. Hope this helps.

Re: MRD testing
Flow cytometry does not require a sample from diagnosis. The more sensitive molecular methods (ASO-PCR and Next Generation Sequencing) do require a sample from diagnosis.
