Mother just diagnosed with multiple myeloma

by schu on Fri Jul 29, 2016 6:35 pm

Over the past couple months my mom has had tests to determine what caused high calcium in her urine. Well, multiple myeloma is the diagnosis. She had had back pain after working in the garden for many years. I wonder if it was related. She has broken almost every bone in her body since a child.

The hardest part is being 12 hours away. My dad is not healthy; he has heart problems. It is difficult to see how they can deal with 7+ acres and declining health.

Mom's first treatment is Tuesday. She had breast cancer 25 years ago. I will check on my folks later in August when I should be able to gauge better how they are doing. More concerned about emotional well being. Fingers crossed.

I'm sorry to hear about your mother, but glad that she is starting treatment. Suggest to her that she might want to get a second opinion from a myeloma specialist if she isn't seeing one already. A specialist treats only people with myeloma and also does research, so is up to date with all of the latest treatments. A specialist will also coordinate care with a local oncologist so that your mother wouldn't have to travel to one very often if the specialist isn't close.

Be sure to contact your mother frequently because this is a time when people are usually having their most difficulty and being shocked by the cancer diagnosis. Having someone to talk with will be very helpful to her.

All the best to your mother, you and the rest of your family as she begins this new journey,
Nancy in Phila
