Yesterday my mom (65 years) was diagnosed with multiple myeloma. She had anemia, elevated proteins, lesions, and bone fractures. Her creatinine and calcium levels are still normal.
It was devastating to me at first, and living this dilemma since 1 week was really disturbing. Today we informed her, she took it better than I expected, and after reading about this disease I am optimistic. It has good prognosis, so I hope our journey will be a smooth one.

Re: Mother, 65, newly diagnosed with multiple myeloma
Welcome to the forum, Lama.
I'm sorry to hear of your mother's diagnosis. I hope she is doing well. Has she started treatment yet and, if so, how is she responding to the treatment?
There have been many advances in the treatment of multiple myeloma in recent years, so the prognosis of patients is improving dramatically. One thing it would be helpful for you to do is arrange for your mother to see a myeloma specialist sometime in the next few months, if she isn't already being seen by one. Having a relationship with a specialist will help ensure that your mother gets access to the best care and best treatments.
You will find discussions here in the forum about many different myeloma-related topics. Take a few minutes to get accustomed to the forum search box and how it works, and you'll be amazed at all that you'll find. The trick with searching the forum is to type in just one or two keywords, not entire phrases. So doing a search for "Velcade", or "Velcade neuropathy", will give you many more potentially useful discussions than searching for "How common is neuropathy with Velcade".
Good luck!

Re: Mother, 65, newly diagnosed with multiple myeloma
Today she started treatment. She took Velcade and dexamethasone; she also received Zometa.
So far no side effects. On Monday, she'll start Revlimid as well. I am optimistic and hope everything goes on smoothly! In 3 months, she may have a stem cell transplant.

Re: Mother, 65, newly diagnosed with multiple myeloma
Glad to hear that your mother is starting treatment, Lama. The combination of Revlimid, Velcade, and dexamethasone is very effective and unlikely to cause any life-threatening side effects. Almost everyone treated with the three-drug combination responds to it. So it is very likely to get you mother's myeloma under control and then reduce the disease burden.
Good luck!

Re: Mother, 65, newly diagnosed with multiple myeloma
My mother (69) was just officially diagnosed yesterday. I'm so thankful to have found this group / resource. I've done a little research into the disease as her symptoms increased, and it started to seem likely she had multiple myeloma. I wish your mom the best as she begins her journey and will say extra prayers for her (and you) as our moms start treatment.
To all the wonderful folks offering guidance and support throughout this forum: THANK YOU. So far my mom doesn't seem to want to really know much about what is going on and has been resistant to the idea of a specialist. But for me, being able to get access to advice and do some research utilizing those with some experience is both helpful and empowering, and hopefully all the knowledge will benefit her in the weeks and months ahead.
Thanks, everyone.

Champion4mom,
Bless you for your care and interest in gathering facts to help your mother.
I've found this form to be most informative and much more educational than info from my doctor. Stay strong, blessings to you and your mother.
