Mom diagnosed with myeloma here in Japan

by lindsay on Fri Jun 06, 2014 12:03 pm

Newbie here. My mom was diagnosed in April 2014. She also has diabetes.

It started with a chest pain in January 2014, she went to an ortho, was told to have an xray, found out that she had a small fracture. She was just given a pain reliever, Salonpas, and a corset. She was told to take a rest until the fracture heals but the pain worsen until she cant take it anymore so we took her to a bigger hospital. We were told that time that her creatinine was high and was admitted right then.

It was really hard because of the language barrier. We are really from the Philippines, but we migrated here years ago. Everything here is in Japanese, even the names of the medicines, so its really hard to tell and do researches.

Right now I don't know what she is receiving but she's taking treatment twice a week plus her insulin everyday. I've noticed that her skin became really dry. She keeps on having fever and she lost weight from 54kg [120 lbs] to 43kg [95 lbs]. She is still wearing a plastic gear around her chest especially made for her size to prevent further fractures. My mom is only 53 years old. I'm still hoping we can find something that could help her feel better, even natural meds if there is really no cure for it.

I need suggestions for alternative meds, supplements, herbal meds, anything that can help her because its really hard seeing her suffer :( and if possible please include where we can find them.

Thanks & God bless!

lindsay

Hi Lindsay, Sorry to hear about your Mom and her suffering with myeloma.

It's difficult to compare across countries, and I don't know what the health care system in Japan is like. In general terms, it would be a good idea to find out what chemotherapy she is taking. It might be Velcade (bortezomib), if it's twice a week. Is she getting a bisphosphonate treatment (Aredia or Zometa) to help with bone healing?

If you had more details, maybe others could help you with your Mom's care. Good luck!

There are a lot of articles posted here that you can access through the Search box to help you to learn more about myeloma.

Hello Lindsay,

The treatment of myeloma can vary a lot from patient to patient and from doctor to doctor. Thus, we cannot tell from your description what treatment your mother is being given, although, as Nancy suggests, it seems likely that she is being treated with Velcade (given the twice-weekly dosing that she is receiving).

Perhaps the hospital where your mother is being treated can provide a translator to help you learn more exactly what your mother is being treated with and also the specifics of her diagnosis.

You asked about alternative medicines that you might want to consider. There are many discussions of such options here in the forum. You can find them by doing searches from the search box on single keywords such as "alternative", "complementary", " and "supplements", or you can just page through all the discussions in the Treatments and Side Effects part of the forum, where many of the relevant discussions can be found.

We wish your mother all the best and look forward to updates about how she is doing.
