Hello everyone,
Mom was diagnosed in mid-May with myeloma and it started with back pain. This spring she had back pain from working in the yard and they found a vertebra that was collapsing. She had kyphoplasty done, but the pain was worse. Blood and urine tests were ordered and they found proteins that pointed them to myeloma.
The pain pills had stopped her all up, so they are dealing with that. She had the hip biopsy done and a skeletal survey. So far the bones are good except T7 thru T10 in her back. The FISH panel results are not back yet but they have started treatment. She is on dexamethasone and Zometa and will start others once the constipation is solved and FISH numbers get back.
She has always done lots of yard work and ate right. I wonder if it was a good thing that she stressed her back this spring, which caused them to diagnose myeloma early on? My sister and I are researching myeloma to help Mom (and us) through this process, and I found this site to be quite helpful. Thank you! We have been reading a ton of info. I think we will know much more in the near future.

Re: Mom diagnosed and kids are helping
I'm sorry you have had to seek this forum out but glad you have found it and see how valuable it it.
This forum will continue to be immensely helpful. Also, please make sure a myeloma specialist is part of your team. You may be seeing a local hematologist/oncologist; that is not enough. Myeloma is a very individual disease, and you need someone who has a lot of experience. If you search these forums, you will see that as a consistent recommendation.
Keep us posted and best wishes.
