MGUS - two bands on both serum & urine immunofixation

by bad blood on Fri Jan 10, 2014 12:53 pm

Okay, now this MGUS continues to amaze me how complicated it can be. More questions ... Why do I know have 2 bands?

The serum says ... Igg lambda and a additional faint Igg lamda.

The urine says ... Two (2) Igg lambda bands and one (1) Free lambda light chains band.

The doc said that is normal for MGUS. This is the first time I seen that on my tests. I have had mgus for more than 7 years. So ... is this normal MGUS?

Hi, I am IGA/IGG Kappa..I don't know if its" normal" but I have come in contact with others that have it as well it is called Bi-clonal.. There is no difference at all in the way you are followed it would be of importance more in treatment if that time should ever come.. Hope that helped ease your anxiety..

So, since you are seeing two bands of the same immunoglobulin type, I "believe" you are seeing a oligoclonal phenomena, not a bi-clonal phenomena (bi-clonal would be the presence of two different immunogloublin type spikes). I'm not a doc, but I don't think this is anything to worry about. My understanding is that this pheonemenon shows up more after a transplant and is actually a good thing from a prognosis standpoint in bone marrow transplant patients.

Again, I'm just taking an uneducated guess at all this. You should really discuss this with a doc or maybe one of the doctors monitoring this site can chime in.

Thanks for trying to figure this out. I am not on any treatments. I am very symptomatic. So, that is why I am confused about my blood tests. I guess I will have another year feeling bad.. No choice..

I'm confused. You're diagnosed as MGUS, yet you are "very symptomatic" and "feeling bad"????

What are the symptoms that you're experiencing, Bad Blood?

Normally, MGUS should not be associated with any symptoms. So if you're experiencing symptoms, you've either been misdiagnosed, or something else is responsible for the symptoms.

Thanks for trying to help. As far as CRAB symptoms, just osteoporosis, calcium bounces around. Episodes of hyponatremia ... hospitalized for. No anemia I have bone pain, frequent infections, and 2 bleeding disorders from the mgus/inhibitors. Very fatigue, leg weakness, memory loss. I sure I didn't list them all .. the memory loss. I just call myself mystery meat. lol

Hi BB, Have you had a skeletal X-ray survey or other scans such as an MRI to determine whether or not you have lesions on your bones? And also, when you say that your calcium bounces around, do you mean that it exceeds normal levels? If your keep copies of your lab results then you can compare your results with the normal ranges. I always ask for copies of my results and have them filed in a large binder...that helps since I can never remember the exact nos. given. If you had bone lesions and also higher than normal calcium, that would be the 'C' and the 'B' in CRAB, unfortunately. You can have more than one 'M' spike or band from the SPEP test also.

Probably you owe it to yourself to try to get a really thorough work-up with a myeloma specialist. If it were to be active myeloma, you could get started on treatments before more damage occurred to your system. Hope that helps...please keep in touch and let us know how it turns out. Good luck!
