Hi all,
New here, have seen a hematologist and have been told I have MGUS. Have had a bunch of labs, only the "not in normal range" ones below.
RBC 3.63 3.93 - 5.22 x10(6)/mcL
MCV 95.6 79.0 - 94.0 fL
Hgb 11.8 gm/dL 12.0 gm/dL - 16.0 gm/dL
Hct 35.5 % 36.0 % - 46.0 %
Kappa Free Light Chains 2.19 0.33 - 1.94 mg/dL
Lambda Free Light Chains 0.93 0.57 - 2.63 mg/dL
Kappa/Lambda Free Light Chain Ratio 2.3548 0.2600 - 1.6500
M1 Band 0.55 gm/dL
IgG 1750 700 - 1600 mg/dL
IgA <5 70 - 400 mg/dL
IgM 42 40 - 230 mg/dL
Alk Phos 154 40 - 104 unit/L
Monoclonal Spike FAH Result 5.0 %
My bone marrow biopsy is scheduled for tomorrow. Will see the hematologist in a week to go over everything.
In the meantime, any thoughts here?
I should just stop googling, I know, but still ...
Thanks!
Amy

Re: New, have MGUS (or more) - bone marrow biopsy tomorrow
Hi Moonsplash,
There could indeed be a possibility of an early stage of MGUS from your lab results (small M1 Band (normal is zero), slightly elevated kappa free light chain, slightly elevated IgG, etc). The bone marrow biopsy is indeed one of the next key steps to helping figure this out definitively.
Bottom line is that most people go through life with MGUS and never know they even have it. Also, your risk of progressing to full blown multiple myeloma is only about 1%/year with MGUS, so try not to fret too much about this.
Let us know how things turn out for you once you get your bone marrow biopsy results back.

I would agree with a bone marrow biopsy. Additionally, if not already done, would suggest getting a skeletal survey to look for any bone related changes.

Thanks for the replies. My doctors have scheduled me for a full body x-ray set prior to the appointment with them. Also have submitted a 24-hour urine. Fun!

Well that's good. Did you have the bone marrow biopsy? How did that go?
It looks like your doctors are being very thorough. Good luck!
