Hi -
Is anyone on the forum aware of adverse effects using melatonin when diagnosed with a monoclonal condition? Two years ago I was diagnosed with MGUS and learned a neighbor is also diagnosed with MGUS. Recently I asked if she took any of the usual supplements (green tea extract, curcumin, etc) assoc with MGUS, smoldering myeloma, and multiple myeloma. Her oncologist claims 'less is more' and appears to discourage supplements including melatonin.
I've taken melatonin for 7-8 years due to chronic insomnia. I did some research and a few studies claim those diagnosed with immune conditions should be cautious using melatonin because the hormone like effects. Has anyone been told not to take melatonin?
Thanks, Diane

Re: MGUS, multiple myeloma, and melatonin
I did not know about the cautions of using melatonin with myeloma.
I had never used any sleeping pills until a few years ago when I was being initially treated for myeloma and was prescribed Ambien (zolpidem). I found it gave me nightmares and did not seem to help me sleep much, so I tried melatonin instead and was using quite a bit at the time. I use it much less today as I sleep well most nights now.
Could you post some links to these studies? I may end up giving away my remaining melatonin.

Re: MGUS, multiple myeloma, and melatonin
Hi Eric -
If you goggle melatonin and multiple myeloma there are a few articles (American Cancer Society) that discuss how melatonin could effect the immune system. However, many of the articles are positive for melatonin in general.
I did not know it is recommended to only take melatonin for 2 months and then take a break. Over 7 years ago, I started with the 0.5 mg dose and ended with the 3 mg dose. Since stopping, my sleep is awful; 2-4 hours/night. Living in AZ, I get lots of sunshine that is supposed to be positive for melatonin production.
I plan on asking my oncologist what her thoughts are on this topic. Having lifetime insomnia issues, I'm hoping to find a solution so I can sleep.
