MGUS with a level of 30 - what does that mean?
My husband is newly diagnosed with MGUS. His level is 30, which the doctor says is stable. Does anyone know what the 30 means?
Re: MGUS with a level of 30 - what does that mean?
Janrice,
Welcome to the forum.
This is really tough to answer without knowing what units of measure or which marker the doctor is referring to.
What country are you in?
Typically, the most important lab figure that one tracks with MGUS is the "M-spike" (also known as M-protein, paraprotein, monoclonal protein, etc). If one had an M-spike of "30", it would likely be expressed as 30 g/L (3 g/dL). But be clear that if a patient has an M-spike of 30 g/L, then the patient would be classified having smoldering multiple myeloma instead of MGUS (assuming all of the patient's other markers and factors still indicated MGUS).
But, again, I am just guessing in the dark with such little information. The value of "30" could also refer to a free light chain value or something else. You should really follow up with your doctor on this.

Re: MGUS with a level of 30 - what does that mean?
Thank you for your helpful reply. I think it is the protein marker they were referring to. Apparently he is borderline something. We are in the UK.
Re: MGUS with a level of 30 - what does that mean?
OK, if you are in the UK and his "protein" number is "borderline", then it could very well be his M-spike given that a 30 g/L (3 g/dL) M-spike is the cutoff between MGUS and smoldering multiple myeloma.
An M-spike is simply a measure of the monoclonal (unhealthy) protein caused by the monoclonal gammopathy.
