Diagnosed with MGUS after experiencing weakness

by Nek on Fri Mar 16, 2018 12:31 pm

After a bout with the flu and pneumonia in January I started to have weakness in both arms. No big deal, as my entire body was weak, just me recovering from all this mess. Weakness got to the point where I could barely hold anything, so I got to my advanced care center where I was admitted into the hospital for a week stay as they thought it could be Guillain-Barre syndrome.

All types of test were ran and I was given prednisone. Weakness got better only to come back the next day after discharge, but not as bad. Two days later, both legs were weak with this feeling that they were asleep all the time, and the bone pain is crazy. So by now I'm freaking out because I'm really wobbly and holding on to everything to get around the house.

Passed the physical neuro exam and after some lab work of things I had never heard of before I was referred to a hematologist / oncologist and diagnosed with MGUS.

Had a skeletal xray, EMG is on next week and go for a bone marrow biopsy the end of this month.

I've started having this sensation that only seems to happen when I wake up, the painful sensation that starts from my head down into my arms and legs. It normally doesn't last long, but the last 2 times I've laid there for more than 20 minutes waiting on it to pass in which one was a lighting bolt that struck me feeling and the last it was going thru my entire body. Neurologist has no clue. They say MGUS has no symptoms and I beg to differ as it starting out rough for me.

I had weakness and was easily out of breath. My family doctor discovered some problems in my blood work up which eventually led to my MGUS diagnosis. Then and now my myeloma doctor continues to attribute this to some pulmonary problem. Of course, all tests of my lungs, etc, have come back with zero problems.

As multiple myeloma can have so many various symptoms, I believe my weakness and easily out of breath are part of my MGUS.

Best of luck in finding what is causing your symptoms.
