MGUS diagnosed at age 29

by martoony on Fri Feb 17, 2012 1:45 am

Hi, I've had MGUS for 5 years and am age 34. I first found out when I was 29 after complaining of feeling quite strange for almost a year before seeing the doctor. They found it during what I call a fishing expedition to find out what was wrong.

I have tested every year and my IgG Kappa has hovered in the .6g/dL - .7g/dL range until just yesterday when I received a result of .9g/dL.

My main question is, should I be worried about these numbers? and should I be worried even more since I'm so young? Thanks for any responses.

Here are my numbers below:

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------

SPEP MONOCLONAL PROTEIN 0.9g/dL

Persistence of M-component previously identified as IgG kappa; repeat IFE
confirmatory.
Previous concentration was 0.6 g/dL on 04/28/2010; now 0.9 g/dL.
No free Kappa/Lambda light chain bands identified.
Suppression of non-monoclonal component gamma globulins.

ALBUMIN FRACTION 4.2 3.3 - 4.4 g/dL
ALPHA 1 PROTEIN FRACTION .21 .10 - .30 g/dL
ALPHA 2 PROTEIN FRACTION 0.8 0.6 - 1.1 g/dL
BETA PROTEIN FRACTION 0.9 0.6 - 1.2 g/dL
GAMMA PROTEIN FRACTION 1.7 0.5 - 1.6 g/dL

Hi, I would assume the doctor ran other tests in addition to the SPEP with immunofixation. How was your hemoglobin, calcium, creatinine, etc. have you had imaging testing i.e. skeletal survey, MRI, PET, etc? Did he check B2M, LDH, CRP, etc. Are you going to have a BMB? These are important parts of any work up. In my case my SPEP was, and is, normal, but I have myeloma as I am light chain only----that was fatefully after a BMB. Good luck. Hopefully, you are, and will remain, MGUS but I assume your doctor will want to do further testing.

Thanks for the response.

I have had the MRI/PET scans and those were normal a couple years ago, though I have not had a bone marrow biopsy. They are just watching the monoclonal spike. CBC, Comprehensive metabolic panel, and lipid panels all normal.

What tests include B2H, LDH, and CRP?

Is it strange that I have had MGUS since 29? I have not seen that anywhere else.
Also, is .9 g/dL alot at my age?

I also would suggest BMB. I was diagnosed in May 2011 and although labs were a little off & I had no M-spike (so I was MGUS/Smoldering), but when BMB was done it was 70% plasma cells. Good luck!
