MGUS and overactive thyroid

by Lucy Woodhouse on Sat Sep 26, 2015 7:26 am

Hi all,

I was diagnosed with MGUS in December 2014. Levels have been going up and down since. I have not been feeling too good, so went to doctors. I had some bloods done and was told I have an overactive thyroid. But she said I was an odd case as my th4 is normal but my th3 is high. She said that it could be linked to my MGUS.

I've since spoken to someone else and they said people do get diagnosed with overactive thyroid before myeloma is diagnosed. I was just wondering if anyone else has had this.

I do not see my haematologist until November 27th.

Thanks in advance.

Hi Lucy -

Last year, the Myeloma Beacon ran a poll and over half of the respondents with MGUS had low thyroid and were taking medications for treatment:

"Weekly Poll – Hypothyroidism & MGUS - 2014" (poll closed Oct 23, 2014)

I've had MGUS for 4 years and had been treated with Synthroid for low thyroid for about 14-15 years before an endocrinologist discovered the MGUS. Sure seems like MGUS is common with autoimmune disorders. The poll was for those with hypothyroidism, not hyperthyroidism (overactive), so don't know there is a difference relating to MGUS.

I have no idea about having an overactive thyroid being related to multiple myeloma. Are you taking an Rx reduce to levels? What was the THS level? There has been some discussion about Synthroid (increases T3 or T4 and lowers TSH) related to M spikes, but don't know if there is a correlation.

When I was diagnosed with MGUS, my M-spike was 1.5 g/dL (15 g/L) and over the past 3-4 years have slowly reduced my Synthroid dose and last fall my spike was 0.8 g/dL (8 g/L). I get tested annually, so soon will know spike level. My doctor said because of the type of MGUS (IgG) I have, it is common for the spike to jump around.

Take care, Diane
