Methadone for severe neuropathy pain?

My husband was diagnosed with multiple myeloma in June 2015 and at the same time had a severe attack of shingles. Unfortunately, he has ended up with chronic peripheral neuropathy from the shingles.

Has tried every available oral medication used to treat neuropathy, with no relief. Has also has tried nerve blocks and a couple of different homeopathic treatments with no success.

I saw a 2010 post here in the forum by myeloma specialist Dr. Hofmeister saying that he has treated neuropathy with low doses of methadone and Lyrica.

I'm wondering what sort of efficacy and side effects we should expect from using methadone for the severe chronic neuropathy my husband has. Any input would be much appreciated.

We have seen two pain management doctors and going to see one of them very soon. When there, we will ask her whether she has any experience in using methadone to treat this type of severe, chronic pain.

As a physical therapist who treated people with chronic pain conditions from all sorts of causes, I treated a few people who were on methadone for the pain. It seemed to be very effective for them and they were very functional with the drug. The reason for coming to me for treatment was to try to get to the cause of the pain and remedy it. None of them had neuropathy from cancer treatment.
