Metallic taste for long time after stem cell transplant

My husband is at Day +29 after his autologous stem cell transplant, and he is doing great in terms of his numbers, but he's still not feeling well. He gets a couple of good hours every day, but otherwise still tired and nauseated.

He is also still getting that metallic taste in his mouth that makes it hard to eat and drink. Has anyone else experienced this metallic taste for so long? And is there anything that seems to help?

Hi JenA:

I am 57 days post transplant and unfortunately still have a metallic taste in my mouth. I don't think it's uncommon. The only thing that helps me is using plastic utensils.

I hope you husband feels better soon.

I had a strong metallic taste after my stem cell transplant. I was told it was caused by my kidneys. Eventually my kidneys improved, and the metallic taste went away.

That is so interesting, because I never had any kidney involvement, and had a metallic taste in my mouth. Wonder what mine was from.

I also had a metallic taste in my mouth after the stem cell transplant, and used plastic utensils for awhile. Not only that, my sense of smell was very distorted. These sensations did not last for too long though, maybe 2-3 weeks. I have not had any kidney involvement, according to blood tests.

Hope that helps. It was a temporary phenomenon. I just assumed that the changes were from the high-dose melphalan.

I am on day +59 today. I did not have any metallic taste but I used coconut oil thatI swished and then spit out. Coconut oil has a history to help remove the metallic taste for chemo patients. I started using it the day I was released and never had the metallic taste and still to this day, all my taste buds are back and I am eating all the foods I used too included very spicy foods. Something interesting is that before my stem cell I had a bad sense of smell and now post stem cell, my sense of smell is better than it ever has been.
